Introduction: What is the English Anthem?

The English anthem is called 'God Save the Queen'. It was written in 1745 by the composer George Frideric Handel.

Handel was born in Halle, Germany to a family of professional musicians. Though he showed himself to be a gifted composer, his family felt that the greatest advantage towards a career in the arts would come from learning a trade. He began his musical training some time around 1703, and was tutored by Georg Philipp Telemann among others.

The lyrics were written by the poet and playwright, Thomas Arne.

Thomas Arne is a famous figure from past centuries. He was born in 1710 and became a dramatist and composer. Arne is best known for rewriting the lyrics for the British National Anthem, "God Save the King" to "God Save the Queen". The anthem has been used ever since to commemorate British royalty.

How Did God Save The Queen Become the National Anthem?

The history of the English National Anthem is quite interesting. The anthem was created in 1745 when a poem called "God Save the King" was set to music by Thomas Arne. The poem was written during the The Jacobite rebellions that were a series of uprisings in Great Britain, Ireland and North America. They were led by James Francis Edward Stuart, son of King James II, with the aim to put James Francis Edward Stuart on the thrones of England, Scotland and Ireland. It wasn't until 1745 that it became the official English national anthem, replacing "God Save the Queen."

"God Save the Queen" was the national anthem for England for over 100 years, but it wasn't until 1745 that it became official. The anthem was first performed in 1745 to celebrate King George II's victory over the Scottish rebels at Prestonpans.
